Frequently Asked Questions

What is ICAE?

The International Center for Academic Evaluation is an oversight association for credential evaluation organizations. All ICAE member organizations are committed to providing the highest quality, accurate credential evaluations, dependable service, and to enhance the level of professional excellence in the field of credential evaluation around the world.

Can ICAE evaluate my credentials?

ICAE is not a credential evaluation organization. ICAE itself does not perform credential evaluations. However, ICAE members do. Through the ICAE website, you can find the right credential evaluator for you.

What makes ICAE different?

While there is no governed oversight of credential evaluations in most countries, including the US, all ICAE members have undergone a rigorous vetting process and are required to become accredited within two years of membership. ICAE is also one of only three credential evaluation organizations with UNESCO approval, and is also in compliance with the US Department of Education and the US Better Business Bureau. That means when you submit a credential evaluation written by an ICAE member, you have the legitimacy of the US Department of Education, the Better Business Bureau, and UNESCO backing up the accuracy and value of the evaluation. You can be assured that your service provider is held to the highest standards of excellence in the field on a national and international level.

What is the role of ICAE in the everyday operations of member organizations?

ICAE ensures compliance with membership requirements, and serves as a resource for guidance, consultation, and further information and research in the field of credential evaluation.

Do I need to choose an ICAE member in my country or location?

No. Your credential evaluator does not need to be physically located near you. If you are in the United States, we have ICAE members located near you. However, ICAE members work with clients from all countries, and at ICAE we have professors and international education experts on call all over the world to provide the information and insight we need to serve you no matter where in the world you are, or where in the world your credential originates from.

Will I get the same credential evaluation from any ICAE member?

The answer is no. However, this does not detract from its accuracy one bit. There are no cookie cutter answers to credential evaluation, and the process is very subjective taking a multitude of factors into account – including the educational structure of the country the credential is from, the academic content of your particular credential, the purpose the evaluation is needed, as well as current admissions and visa approval trends. That is why it's important to choose the right ICAE credential evaluation organization for your unique education and situation.

Which ICAE credential evaluator should I choose?

Not every credential evaluation agency is right for every evaluation. This is an important question to answer because it is important to avoid ending up with the right evaluation for the wrong purpose. Here are several factors to take into consideration when choosing the right ICAE member for your credential evaluation:

  • Is it in your price range?
  • Does the turnaround time fit your needs?
  • Is the evaluation for a visa or academic program admission?
  • Do they accept educational documents in the way that fits your needs – email, fax, mail, etc.?

If you need a credential evaluation for a visa petition or RFE response, you want to work with an evaluation agency that specializes in visas. If your evaluation is for college or graduate school application, the agency for you specializes in higher education. If you need to email copies of your documents, the agency that can write the evaluation from that is the one for you. If you're on a budget, the cheaper service is right for you, and if you need an evaluation tomorrow, the agency that can provide fast turnaround time is the one you want to work with. How do I leave feedback or file a complaint?

You can contact ICAE or the member you worked with directly to leave feedback. To file a complaint, go to the COMPLAINT [insert link] section of the ICAE website where you can file your complaint. ICAE members are required to respond to the complaint promptly for resolution. If a member receives excessive complaints or has more than three unresolved complaints, membership is suspended. Your feedback is important to us, and is integral to our ongoing mission to uphold the highest standard of excellence among our members and in the field of credential evaluation.
